For The Bible Tells Me So
So for many of you, this movie/documentary is an old thing, however, for me, last night this was my first viewing of For the Bible Tells Me So by Director Daniel Karslake. It is an excellent exploration of how the religious sector has been teaching lies about homosexuallity for so long, that all believe it to be truth. By exploring the historical aspects as to why the bible was written the way it was, the true meaning of the so-called anti-gay passages can be turned upside down.
This documentary dives into several different families who were raised on the bible and at one point had to face the fact that one of their children were gay. One woman was so blinded by her teachings, that unfortunately she said some wicked things to her daughter who had come out and in turn, her daughter eventually committed suicide. It was through her death, that she finally realized she must educate herself on her beliefs and find out the truth. To her dismay, she realized that what her preachers had been instilling in her all of these years was blatantly wrong and the death of her daughter was due to her ignorance.
I think the most stunning thing is the in your face hate that comes from the Jerry Faldwell types and the divisions they create by using the ignorant and uneducated. They choose selective passages to follow and insist that if you are not the sheep christian then hell is upon you and you must be saved.
So painful.
Religious hate is a serious offense and unfortunately, it spreads far and wide. There is absolutely nothing accepting about religion unless you accept that you must follow blindly. I will give the New Hampshire Episcopals some credit though. Instead of taking the bible for it's literal meaning, they have accepted that God would rather someone be gay than for God's congregation to shun him. Now, I use the word God here in the context of this is what they believe. I do not believe in God, but I do believe that if I did, this would be the way a loving God would expect his people to be.
Either way, if you haven't seen this documentary and religious hatred bothers you, this is a great movie to help you brush up on those passages the religious fanatics bark at you and responses to their sheepish spewings. Unfortunately, they do not see themselves as ignorant and we will never be able to get them to see how ignorant they truly are. But we can at least defend ourselves within ourselves knowing that they truly do not have an understanding of their book and many religious types openely admit that many Christians are clueless as to what they actually believe.
